The Dentzel Menagerie Carrousel is located at the Ontario Beach Park in Rochester, New York. Manufactured by G.A. Dentzel in 1905, it is one of only six remaining Menagerie Carrousels in the United States.
These carved Dentzel animals are world renowned for their superior craftsmanship, and notably for being the most anatomically correct of the various carrousel styles.
In 1980 the Dentzel Carrousel was declared a Rochester Landmark. A total restoration of the carrousel took place in 1998.
The images you are about to view are original silver gelatin prints that have been individually hand colored by the artist Cheryl Amati Martin. The 15 Carrousel images constitute a unique series of works within Cheryl Amati Martin’s broader body of work known collectively as American Way Collection.
American Way Collection gives Martin the forum to present the audience with her life-long passion for capturing the essence of people, places & things that have unique history—our history. Meticulously selected subjects in the American Way Collection range from curious memorabilia or expressive grit faces, to the irreplaceable classic Ford and Chevy automobile, all of which provoke thought, and force the viewer to pause. Martin embraces forgotten subject matter and creates genuine images that portray the importance of another time or place, usually evoking a memory, and always leaving an indelible impression on the viewer.
The Rochester, New York based photographer uses a variety of medium including oils, water colors, pencils and coloring pens to create her trademark hand colored black & white photographs. Each image constitutes a unique silver gelatin print individually colored and finished.
During her career, Martin has enjoyed three successful solo exhibits in Rochester during 1996, 1999, and 2002, as well as a two-month solo exhibition at Wohlfarth Galleries in Washington, D.C. in 2001. In addition to awards in numerous fine art photography venues, Martin’s photography is found in private and public collections throughout the United States and abroad.
Cheryl Amati Martin says her American way Collection will be an "ongoing life's work theme. It can be so many things, always open ended.”
